I have something to confess to you today, I love sports. But just practicing them, I don’t understand that astonishing interest generated only by watching them. Going to competitions, contests and trophies is not my thing although I perfectly catch the emotions and enthusiasm that accompany each sporting event. 

And speaking of sports as an entertaining show in Madrid, first mention must go to football. Since there is a post fully dedicated to soccer, today the focus is on other sports:

Basketball

The ACB League, also known as Liga Endesa for its sponsor, is Spain’s premier professional basketball league. Three Madrid teams take part in it: Real Madrid, Movistar Estudiantes and Montakit Fuenlabrada.

The “Copa del Rey” and the “Endesa Supercopa” were held in Madrid last year while in 2020 they will be held in Malaga and Tenerife.

Tennis

Davis Cup – Final Round 2020

With 118 years of history, Davis Cup is the largest annual international tennis tournament. It will be held from 23 to 29 November in Madrid Caja Mágica.

Mutua Madrid Tennis Open 2020

This tournament belongs to the world elite of tennis tournaments, framed in the circuit Masters 1000 of the male ATP and Premiere Mandatory of the female WTA. It’s one of the few Opens in the world where both male and female panels are played simultaneously.

It is held from 1 to 10 May 2020 in Madrid Caja Mágica.

Horse Riding

Zarzuela Hippodrome

Its seasons run from early March to December. The races are held every Sunday in the morning except during the months of July and August that they are held on Thursdays’ evenings.

The Madrid Grand Prix is held in summer and the Duke of Toledo Memorial Grand Prix is in autumn.

Madrid Horse Week

Held in November at IFEMA.

This is the largest equestrian event in Spain. The sports program of this seventh edition, will host for the second time in Spain the FEI Dressage World Cup. In addition, and following the success of the last edition, will return the III “Maestros de la Vaquera” Cup,

Championships in Club de Campo Villa de Madrid

Since its inauguration, the Club has organised the Madrid Grand Prix and, today, it’s also part of the CSI 5* Madrid-Longines Global Champions Tour, the most prestigious equestrian competition in the world, hosting, among its events, the Grand Prix and the Copa de S.M. El Rey.

Throughout the year, the Club also hosts several national and international competitions of the highest level in both jumping and dressage.

Rugby

There are several competitions, both national and regional, professional and university. At the national level, the main ones are the Heineken League and the Iberdrola League. Within the area of Madrid, the 1st Regional stands out in which 10 clubs participate. The season consists of 18 days starting in September and ending in April.  

The Madrid teams that participate in the 1st Regional are: XV Hortaleza Negro, C.R. Majadahonda, XV Sanse Scrum, CAU Madrid RC, CRC Pozuelo B, Liceo Francés B, Getafe Club de Rugby, Complutense Cisneros Theta, Club de Rugby Veterinaria and Club Rugby Alcalá. 

On May 29 at Wanda Metropolitano you may attend the España – Classic All Blacks game.

Running races 

San Silvestre Vallecana

This is the most massive athletic event in Spain, it’s a 10 km race that is held every December 31st.

The event consists of two different competitions: a popular one (for people over 16 years old) and another one for professionals. There is also a Mini competition for children under 16 years old, which is held on 29 December.

Movistar Half Marathon Madrid 2020

The event, included in the official calendar of the International Association of Road Marathons and Races (AIMS), runs through the northeastern part of the city. It’s held alongside to a 5 km race, the ProFuturo Race. It’s one of the most important races of this distance in Spain and one of the most popular in Europe.

It’s held on 29 March 2020.

EDP Rock´n´Roll Madrid Marathon & 1/2 2020

In April, the streets of Madrid host the Madrid Popular Marathon (known by runners as Mapoma). The event has been awarded the Gold Label by the International Athletics Federation.

It is also part of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, the largest running circuit in the world, and has live music on more than 20 stages, a festival at the finish line, a 10km parallel race and another half marathon race to turn Madrid into a sports festival.

It should be noted that it has one of the most beautiful courses on the international calendar. It’s held on April 26th 2020.

Women’s Race 2020 (“Carrera de la mujer”)

The Carrera de la Mujer (Women’s Race) is the biggest women’s sports festival in Madrid and serves to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer. It has a distance of approximately 6.3 km and in the 2018 event brought together more than 35,000 runners.

It will be held on May 2020.

For instance, 32nd Spanish International Badminton Villa de Madrid, 19th Triathlon World Cup, Second Phase Beach Volleyball Continental Cup, 38th Senior Fencing World Cup “Villa de Madrid” – Men’s Sabre, Winter Games, Final of the cycling tour (“Vuelta ciclista”) of Spain, Meeting of Athletics.
