A morning a few years ago we received a questionnaire from a client who was relocating to Madrid to settle down with his family and his pet. The surprise was to see that it was not one pet but several: 2 dogs, 2 cats and 1 parrot!

To further complicate the situation, they wanted to live downtown because of the school they preferred.

—Luckily this is not normal —says Paloma cautiously.
—Right! but 1 dog or maximum 2 dogs is very common —answers Almudena, stating the difficulty of some assignments.
—Or 1 cat.
—Also, a tiny little fish
—And what about the classic pet bird?

The truth is that finding a home to rent with a pet adds trouble. Many landlords are reluctant to accept tenants with pets because they feel that their property may suffer more damage: scratches, odors, etc. Moreover, some refuse straightforwardly, even in the ads.

—Of course it depends a lot on whether it’s a huge Mastiff or a mini Chihuahua —observes Almu.
—Absolutely! For this matter, the smaller the pet, the easier to get the owner to accept —agrees Palo.
—Agree!

Being realistic in our expectations is critical to our success in finding a home. It’s important to know that we are going to encounter additional difficulties when moving with our pets.

The biggest difficulties are when renting homes with well-kept gardens or furnished ones. Keep in mind that everything can be solved with organization and planning.

—Well, let me know what happened to the Bruggers and their dogs and cats?
—And don’t forget about their parrot!
—Yeah!
—The truth is, they had to give up living in a flat downtown.
—Kind of logical.
—We found a cozy home with a pet lover landlord and at a reasonable distance from the school.
—And they were lucky that the school moved closer to their home.
—Well, name it good luck or information.
—I would say that they were lucky enough to find people with information.

Of course, finding a home with your pet is possible.

You may need to make some adjustments to your zone preferences.

It’s also common for homeowners to accept a higher security deposit as a guarantee. This deposit will be returned at the end of the contract as long as the property is in good condition.

It’s convenient to leave aside the options that expressly indicate that they do not accept pets no matter how much in love you may have fallen with the photos. It’s a waste of time.

For this and many other reasons, you should gather as much information as possible about Madrid and its customs beforehand. And the easier to collect it, the better.
